Do You Have Animals in Your Attic?

Are you hearing noises in your attic? It could be your over-active imagination – after all, it is almost Halloween – but it might just be the real deal. Putting paranormal activity aside, it’s possible you’ve got animals in your attic. In fact, we receive many calls about nuisance wildlife in the attic this time of year, and we have performed dozens, if not hundreds, of attic clean outs in Glens Falls, Saratoga, and even in more urban areas, such as Albany.

Whether you’ve got bats in your belfry or squirrels in the attic, our Albany pest control professionals can help you identify the type of pest you have, perform an attic cleanout and install new pest-control insulation.

What’s that Noise in The Attic?

Several animals can be found living in the attics of homes and businesses. The types of noises you are hearing, as well as and the time of day or night you are hearing them, can help you determine which animal is living up there.

Squirrels

Nuisance WildlifeThese rodents are most active during the day, especially early morning and just before sunset. Mother squirrels tend to choose attics to give birth and raise their young. Since summer litters are born in August, the young squirrels are most active in fall. You will usually hear fast, light scampering (sometimes accompanied by the rolling of nuts), and you may find leaves, sticks and droppings that look like fat grains of brown rice, as well as chewed wood or electrical wires.

Mice

MiceThese tiny critters are nocturnal, so you’re most likely to hear their rapid, light scurrying at dusk, dawn and late at night. They are known to infest homes all year long, but especially during the cold winter months. Mice produce over 100 droppings per day and we have found insulation inside attics completely infested with mice, their droppings and urine. Since mice have the potential to transport disease, a full attic restoration is often in order.

Raccoons

Curious and mischievous, these expert climbers are nocturnal, although they are sometimes active during the day, as well. Raccoons are large, so the noises will often be loud and sound more like heavy walking than light scampering. They are also vocal, sometimes chattering or growling, and baby raccoons have a distinct cry. In northeastern NY and VT, mother raccoons typically enter during the spring in order to give birth and raise their young, although they rarely leave unless they are permanently removed.

Bats

BatsWhile they prefer a cave, your attic is a nice alternative for roosting bats. These nocturnal pests live a very long time and they stay in the same place year-round, or migrate and return each summer. Mothballs and ammonia do not work to keep them out, and a fully infested attic is one of the biggest and most complex nuisance wildlife problems. Small numbers of bats make little noise, though you may hear occasional squeaking or crawling. Aside from physically seeing them enter your home, the odor of their droppings, or guano, is a good indicator that you have bats in your attic.

Opossums

Many people are surprised to learn that opossums make great climbers, and they like the safe haven of a warm, dry attic. Although rather quiet, they are mostly active at night and will usually sound like a slow, heavy animal walking through the attic. They tend to enter during the spring to birth babies and again in the winter months to stay warm and dry, sometimes as many as 6 adults living together under one roof. They are widely known for their large, smelly droppings, which can be identified by pointed tips, and since they frequently die in attics, opossums are often discovered due to the stench.

When to Use a Professional Exterminator

Any time you have animals living in the attic or walls of your home, it’s best to contact a professional exterminator. There could be a nest of babies you don’t know about, and in some case, rabies or toxins may be present. Unless you are trained and have the proper equipment, you should not attempt to remove wildlife, animal waste or damaged insulation on your own.

Who Ya Gonna Call?
